Researchers and Team

Rodrigo Cádiz is a composer and electrical engineer, specializing in computer music, sound synthesis and electroacoustic composition. He is currently full professor at the Music Institute and School of Engineering at UC. He is a very active researcher, with around sixty peer-reviewed international publications and a well established composer, with about sixty premiered works for a great variety of formats. He is a member of the editorial board of Revista Resonancias.

José Manuel Izquierdo is a musicologist, specializing in the music of the 19th century with a focus on areas such as opera, composers, instruments, and practices. He is currently the Director of Research and Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Arts at UC.

Daniela Fugellie is a musicologist, currently Director of the Music Institute at Universidad Alberto Hurtado. Her research is devoted to the history of art music in Latin America and Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries and the cultural history of music. She is a member of the editorial board of Revista Musical Chilena and Twentieth-Century Music. As a researcher she has studied several aspects of the institutional history of Chilean art music during the 20th century, including the establishment of avant-garde projects, the role of cultural diplomacy, the biographies of musicians and ensembles devoted to contemporary, early, and chamber music.

Eileen Karmy is a socio-musicologist based at the Faculty of Arts in the Universidad de Playa Ancha (Valparaíso). Her research focuses on music politics, musical labor, and organizations, with a special interest in the social history of music. As a researcher, she has studied Chilean music from the perspective of musical labor, unveiling the history of musicians’ guild organizations from the late 19th century and their crossroads with artistic societies and the labor movement, including ‘hidden’ musicians’ biographies. She is currently researching amateur music in early 20th-century Valparaiso, including youth orchestras, marching bands, and community choirs. Between 2020 and 2022 she collaborated at the Chilean Society for Musicology as secretary, joined the steering committee of the Working in Music International Research Network, and in 2022 she joined the board of directors of FOJI in the representation of the Ministry of Culture.

René Silva is a composer, with around fifty works created for different instrumental combinations. He is currently a faculty member at the School of Music and Sound Arts of Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia). He recently graduated from the doctoral program in the Arts UC where he conducted doctoral work focused on the historic, compositional and heritage aspects of the Chilean street barrel organ under the direction of Rodrigo Cádiz.

Pablo Soto is a classical guitarist and researcher. As a guitar performer, he has developed an outstanding career with recitals in Latin America and Europe. He has also been awarded in national and international guitar competitions. As a researcher, he has studied the history of classical guitar in Chile and the music performance with a focus on areas such as technique, repertoires, discourses and education.

Nayive Ananías is a journalist, Master in Latin American Musicology from UAH and Doctor of Arts with a mention in Music from UC. Her line of research is linked to female music criticism in the Southern Hemisphere. He has taught courses on this subject in Argentina, Brazil and Spain. Since 2016 he has served as a jury in the category Best Literary Music Publication of the Pulsar Awards in Chile. Between 2020 and 2022 she participated as an evaluator of the Fund for the Promotion of National Music of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage. In April 2023, she released the EP “Matar a Saudade”, her debut as a singer-songwriter in Portuguese.

Louis Leclerc is a data consultant and research engineer specialized in Digital Humanities. He has more than ten years of experience in the data industry in France and Chile, where he worked with Inria Chile, a French research institute for digital sciences and technology. He currently takes part in several research projects in computer science, arts and humanities, and economics. Louis holds a Master in Finance and Corporate Strategy from Sciences Po Strasbourg.

Ignacio Rivera has a PhD in Sociology from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a MA in musicology from the University of Chile. His research has focused on the relationship between music, memory, popular culture, and collective identities. He has worked as a university teacher in Chile and the United Kingdom on modules about the sociology of music, social theory and qualitative research methods. His topics of interest are social research methods, sociology of culture, and cultural theory. He has experience as a consultant in education, training, human capital and citizen participation.

Diego Caris Lazo is a student of the Bachelor of Music with a mention in Musicology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, with a strong interest in classical music of the 19th century and the early 20th century from a historiographical approach. In line with Animupa, his research addresses the current state of the orchestral repertoire of national origin in some of the main ensembles in the country. It seeks to determine the impact of cultural policies on the behavior of the orchestral repertoire and the discussion about the national canon.

María Francisca Moraga Fadel is a student in the Master in Latin American Musicology program of Universidad Alberto Hurtado (UAH). She has obtained a Double Bass Performance and Musicology degree from the Catholic University of Chile (PUC). Dedicating her career to the study of classical music in Chile, she has cataloged the personal and musical archives of multiple institutions and groups across the country. Additionally, she has attended conferences and published magazines focusing on such topics. Her current research focuses on the musical and artistic activity of the theaters Teatro Municipal de Santiago and Teatro Colón between 1955 and 1973. In the field of teaching, she works as an instrument and music theory instructor in youth orchestra projects.

Maximiliano Ladrix is a student of Bachelor of Music with a major in Musicology and a certificate in film aesthetics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, currently a thesis student in the Fondecyt project “Culturas del casete: cultura, escucha y participación” of professor Laura Jordán (PUCV). His research interests are music in Latin American cinema, sound and audiovisual archives, semiotics and aesthetics. In addition, he develops as a trumpet player in musical projects related to jazz-fusion and has worked in education and photographic diffusion projects.

Víctor Godoi Vidal is a final year student of the Artes Musicales y Sonoras career at the UACH in Valdivia. He studied double bass at the Conservatório Regional Eborae Mvsica, in Évora, Portugal. Later in Valdivia, he studied at the Colegio de Música Johann Sebastian Bach, and in 2019, upon entering the university, he was part of the cast of the Choir and the Folkloric Ballet of the UACH. He is currently finishing his degree project, doing research and composition work with recognized sounds from Valdivia. 

Lucas von Mühlenbrock is an undergraduate musicology student at the Music Institute of the Catholic University of Chile (PUC). He is currently working on his thesis, where he studies the self-managed scene of scholarly music in Chile, from the perspective of the value of work. At the same time, he works as a pianist, with jazz, fusion and classical music being his favorite styles.

Álvaro Bravo has a Bachelor’s degree in Music with a Major in Musical Composition and a Bachelor’s degree in Aesthetics theories at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is pursuing a Master’s degree in Latin American Musicology at Universidad Alberto Hurtado. During his career, he has been dedicated to studying and divulging classical music in Chile and Latin America, researching Latin American women composers, and editing sheet music. On the other hand, he has actively collaborated in publications, congresses, concerts, and initiatives of non-profit organizations such as Factoría Musical and Idava. His current research focuses on the studies of art songs by Chilean and Argentinian women composers from the first half of the 20th century, emphasizing the possible transnational relationships.
